At my husband Brad\u2019s 40th birthday party, everything looked perfect on the surface\u2014music playing, guests laughing, kids running wild across the yard, and me trying to keep everything from falling apart while pretending I wasn\u2019t exhausted.<\/p>\n
Forty suited Brad in a way I sometimes envied. Even after all these years, I still found myself watching him across a crowded room and thinking how easily he could fill it with charm without even trying. That day was no different. He stood near the patio, smiling at something someone said, completely at ease in the life I had built around him.<\/p>\n
I was juggling trays, answering questions about food, and making sure no child was about to tip over the cake before it was time. It was supposed to be a celebration, and I wanted it to feel like one.<\/p>\n
Then I noticed our four-year-old son, Will, darting under tables again. He was full of energy, as usual, his little hands sticky from cake pops he definitely wasn\u2019t supposed to be grabbing.

\u201cI wasn\u2019t!\u201d he shouted back, which meant, in his language, that he absolutely had been or was planning to.<\/p>\n
I turned back toward the party, briefly catching Brad laughing at something my best friend Ellie had said. Ellie had been in my life since childhood\u2014closer than family in every way that mattered. She helped me set things up, brought gifts early, and had always been the person I trusted most after my husband.<\/p>\n
I didn\u2019t think anything of it. Not then.<\/p>\n
